THE ACHILLES' HEEL OF ALGAL BIOFUELS: PEAK PHOSPHATE - AN UPDATE

"If a peak in worldwide production of rock phosphate will occur within the next few decades, this will restrict the amount of food that the world will be able to produce in the future, against a rising number of mouths to feed. Additionally, there is a consensus of analytical opinion that we are also close to the peak in world oil production. One proposed solution to the latter problem is to substitute oil-based fuels by biofuels, although this matter is not as straightforward as is often presented ... Rock phosphate production in 2011 amounted to 191 million tonnes, against which must be compared the 472 million tonnes we have estimated would be needed to grow sufficient algae to fuel the world with algal biodiesel. Since food production is already being thought compromised by rock phosphate resource depletion, finding such a significant additional quantity is probably impossible. Currently, the U.S. produces less than 30 million tonnes of rock phosphate annually, but would require 104 million tonnes of the material to produce 22% of the world's total algal diesel, in accord with its current "share" of world petroleum-based fuel. Hence, for the U.S., security of fuel supply could not be met by algae-to-diesel production using even all its indigenous rock phosphate output, and significant imports would still be needed. This is in addition to the amount of the mineral necessary to maintain agriculture."

EARTHQUAKES HIT GAS-RICH GRONINGEN PROVINCE IN NETHERLANDS

"The Dutch province of Groningen, which sits on the Slochteren natural gas deposit, was hit by two earthquakes as pressure grows on Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp. Two quakes measuring 3.2 and 2.7 on the Richter scale struck the area just before midnight and in the early morning today to cut output amid forecasts for heavier temblors. ... NAM, the Dutch gas-production venture of Shell and Exxon that operates the Slochteren field, said today in a statement that it will compensate all damage resulting from the quakes. The company has set aside 100 million euros for claims ... 'Earthquakes have taken place in the northern Netherlands since 1986 and have been linked by experts to gas production' ... The strength of earthquakes triggered by gas production in the region may rise to 5 on the Richter scale, according to a study released last month by the State Supervision of Mining at the Ministry of Economic Affairs ... The Dutch parliament discussed the risks of gas production yesterday as municipalities and the executives of the province council urge the government and field operators to lower output and slow activity."

MALI A FOOTHOLD FOR 21ST CENTURY RESOURCE WARS IN AFRICA

"In Syria, the terrorists are friends of Hollande. And now they are accusing the ‘terrorists’ in Mali in trying to overthrow a sovereign state. But in Syria, it seems to be ok to overthrow the sovereign state. So we are there to defeat the ‘terrorists’ in Mali, but they are friends in Syria. This is a hypocrisy that is now open for the world to see … Africa is untapped economically, and the West is really racing with China to gain [some] sort of dominance over this continent, because all the uranium, the cobalt, the titanium, the lithium, all the rare earth minerals, the gas, the oil. Africa is absolutely bountiful. And this is gonna be a battleground in the resource wars of the 21st century."

"Alles was morgen passieren wird, geschieht bereits jetzt.
